outh America has finally made it onto my scooping list!  Dave Unpronouncable and I were planning to visit Uruguay in May / June 2006 but, unfortunately, we were so busy in Argentina that we simply didn't have enough time to squeeze Uruguay in!

To get there from Buenos Aires you can either fly or get a boat.  Both are reasonably expensive, with American Airlines from Ezeiza being slightly cheaper than Aerolineas Argentinas from Aeroparque Jorge Newberry (very close to the centre) and the boats being slightly cheaper still.  Boats (operated by Buquebus) leave from the quay close to Retiro station and go to either Montevideo (3 hours) or Colonia (1 hour) which is a tourist hotspot.

The beer situation in Uruguay is, unfortunately, nothing like that in Buenos Aires with only three huge conglomerates producing swill for the local market and no "artesanal" brewers yet taking the plunge.  This was one of the reasons we didn't make the trip so, in a few years, we might reconsider when we return to Argentina...

Per from Ohhh my Head has recently been to Uruguay and confirms that it is a country of three national brands with no micros anywhere to be seen.  Good, that means I didn't miss anything by not going...
